Penelope Worsley talks to ATS members about the Karen Hilltribes
A presentation by Penelope Worsley, Director of the Karen Hilltribes Trust
Thursday, 25 February 2010
On 25th February, the ATS was delighted to welcome Penelope Worsley, Founder and Director of The Karen Hilltribes Trust, a small UK charity which works in conjunction with The Foundation for Hilltribes in Thailand.
This was the first in a series of joint events between the Anglo-Thai Society and Samaggi Samagom (the Thai Students Association in the UK.) In her presentation, Penelope shared some fascinating insights into the Karen people and outlined the economic and social infrastructure of what is one of the largest ethnic minorities in the Kingdom of Thailand. She also explained how the work of the Karen Hilltribes Trust aims to help the Karen people by assisting with education and providing clean drinking water, while at the same time working with them to help them take more control of their own lives.
After the presentation, a thought-provoking discussion took place on the kinds of projects that might lead the Karen people to self-help and sustainability while still retaining their identity and culture. More information and how you can support this very worthy charity can be found at her website.
